What Are Your Winter Flip-flops?

By: Caroline Wilbert (View Profile)

I began my quest for the perfect winter equivalent to flip-flops three years ago. I was a new mom and in no mood to wear anything less comfortable than flippers. However, it was November, my feet were cold, and I looked ridiculous.

On my first post-baby outing, I bought a pair of red sneakers without backs. I’ve since added another similarly styled shoe from Cole Haan, and while I like these fine, I’m still searching for the perfect winter flops. Do you have a pair?

The current trend of the ballet shoe. Socks don't really look that great but feet aren't as cold as when you still wear flip flops (or thongs). Some things you just can't give up because it is winter unless you are in the North I guess. Could not do a plastic shoe... no way.

I too have been searching for the winter flip flop my whole life. And I've found it! I agree with Jacinta that Crocs are usually ugly, but I have found a pair of Crocs that are actually very cute. They're the "ballet-inspired Prima" that come in lots of fun colors (mine are fluorescent green). They do not look like normal Crocs, rather, they look like cute, yet sporty (and feminine!) flats. Here's a link to check out: http://shop.crocs.com/pc-33-4-prima.aspx?reqid=33&reqProdTypeId=41p&subsectionname=footwear§ion=products
I'm reluctant to suggest Crocs just because there is surely a pair of comfy-as-flip-flop shoes out there that are also stylish. If you feel "style be damned" then you should try out the new fur-lined crocs. Another option is Uggs. Again, their stylish days have come and gone, but they really are so cozy and comfy. I found mine for half price on eBay. I love my flat speedcat puma shoes, though they're not exactly flip-floppy. They are comfy though, and cute too. Oh Puma also has these really comfy looking slip-on fur-lined boots that would be a great alt to Uggs––they're called "YUTORI FUYU." Can't you just hear yourself say "let me grab my fuyus!" as you leave the house?

Am I the only person who occasionally embarrasses herself by referring to flipflops as thongs? And then I have to quickly correct myself lest people think I am talking about my underwear.

The closest thing I have to winter flip flops are the booties from Old Navy Jacinta O'Halloran recommended in Found It Loved It. I can't wear those outside, though, so I'm still looking for my winter flip flop. Merrell makes some good stuff, but I haven't decided on a particular style for me. Can't wait to see other people's recommendations!

They're not as cute as flip-flips, but I love my dansko clogs. You can easily slip in and out of them, just like you can with flops, they are super comfortable, and you can wear thick wool socks underneath. You can't buy them for 1.99 at Longs, but they last a long time.

Easy. Just buy the flip flop socks and then you don't have to buy another pair of shoes (not recommended for snowbirds) While we're loving flip flops, I want to give three cheers to my new Chaco flip flops...they're wonderful. Here are the flip flop socks: http://www.flipflopsocks.com/
