SheSez’s hair stylist expert, Enzo Angileri, put the 2007 Emmy “up” hairdo’s in the … “Not So Much” category (as opposed to the “We Love”). With that in mind, we asked him what makes a super glam A-list “up” do.
Q: Enzo, do you not like “up” styles in general, or did you just not like the way they were done at the Emmy’s?
A: I love an up hairstyle when it is done correctly and the woman’s face and hair are taken into consideration. Not all women look great with their hair up. And, I did like some of the styles at the Shrine. I thought Christina Aguilera’s French twist was perfect and I also liked Becki Newton from Ugly Betty. Hers was parted in the middle with a slight bump at the crown.
Q: What was it exactly that you didn’t care for with all the “up” hairstyles we saw last Sunday on the red carpet?
A: In my humble opinion, they were amateurish. They are just trying too hard. Of the “up-do’s” that I saw, the pulled-back dos were doing too many things at once. They also seemed messy, frizzy, and out of control.
Q: The two up styles that stand out for us, here at SheSez, are Sandra Oh and Heidi Klum. And the Today Show stylist, by the way, pointed to Heidi’s hair as the best on the red carpet.
A: Well, I certainly don’t want to pick on Heidi or Sandra as they are both lovely ladies. But, truthfully, I didn’t care for either of their styles. To me, they are perfect examples of what I am talking about: half up, half down, half wavy, half straight. There’s just too much going on there.
Q: Ok, that being said, give us some guidelines for doing hair up.
A: First of all, consider the shape of your hair. Not all hair works well in an up hairdo. It really works best when you have some length. Also, consider your face. Hair pulled back doesn’t work on all face sizes, shapes, and profiles.
My second rule of thumb is that it must feel casual, not extreme. It has to look soft and natural. I always talk about movement when it comes to hair. Obviously, movement is limited with a pulled back style—but perhaps one piece is pulled out. Katherine Heigl, for example, had a low chignon with one piece kind of looping out. It gave the style a natural feel.
