Richer for the Holidays

By: Sandy Taylor-Furst (View Profile)

Your beauty mission for the Holidays? Ask your hair colorist to deepen your hair’s natural hue, winter jewel tones with these three little words: Make me richer.

What could be more fun and exotic for the winter holiday doldrums? By going a few shades darker can bring out your features, giving you a more dramatic look (be sure to update your makeup if needed), but bear in mind that the words darker and richer translate as two completely different things. I am a Walnut Creek, California hair colorist and creator of the Style Like A Pro DVD series. “Going richer means evening out the colors that exist in your hair, and adding chocolate browns, golden browns, and red-browns if the summer sun has turned your hair brassy or orange-y.”

These jewel-toned shades also look beautiful when used as highlights. A few strategically placed highlights will help you to avoid looking drab and add what I call “twinkle” and “movement” to your hair. Also noteworthy: Toning the ends of your hair to a darker shade to match your natural color will make your hair appear thicker and healthier, so be sure to talk to your colorist about this process. And, of course, using a shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair, and protecting it from sun year-round, will help to keep your color from fading. Remember only shampoo your hair every second or third day. Dried out hair from shampooing, the environment, or poor use of electrical hair tools create dull and rebellious hair. If you have any problems with your hair that just seem to never be addressed, write back. Remember …

This season WE can be richer without selling the farm. Just go to your colorist/stylist and share your thoughts with them. Go ahead it’s time to be RICHER!

Happy and fun-filled Holidays,

Sandy

Thanks for these tips Sandy. It's funny because I know hair stylists who encourage going darker in the summer because the sun lightens hair and then going lighter in winter so that you appear "sunnier and brighter." Thing is most people want to be brighter in summer and deeper---I like your description "richer" better---in winter. I know I want to be richer! Love the tip to make ends more natural looking. Like Carin, I can't wait to read what's next!

Hey Sandy! I loved your article. I didn't know that darkening the ends of hair makes it look thicker & healthier. I wish you lived closer, so you could do my hair! I can't wait for your next article.
