Beauty I Dos and I Don’ts

Do you do color correction? If they tilt their head like you just asked a puppy if he wanted to go outside … again, politely run!

Good Answer: Yes, I can correct any discolorations you might have including rosacea, dark circles, and sallow tones in your skin.

Can you hand mix and create custom foundations?

Good Answer: Of course I do! I will do whatever I need to do to match a skin tone.

Do you airbrush? How long have you done airbrushing? Do you use water or silicone based formulas? Where did you study?

Answer: You want someone who has done this on a daily basis for a good year or who has taken Master Classes in Airbrushing Techniques. Go have a “trial” and see what kind of work they do.

How many weddings do you do a year? Other than weddings, what other type of MUA work do you do?

Answer: 25–30 is the minimum to make sure they are really experienced in bridal makeup. Also, they should be working at something involving makeup for the rest of their year! If they flip burgers full time and then act as a MUA on the weekends … ask more questions!

How long will it take you to do my makeup the day of the wedding?

Answer 1: Makeup alone with no airbrush: forty-five minutes to an hour

Answer 2: Airbrushed makeup: 30–45 minutes.

Answer 3: If she/he is also doing your hair then add another forty-five minutes to an hour.

I Do’s and I Don’ts

Don’t wear mineral makeup. This is terrible for photos and ends up looking chalky.

Don’t have a facial the night before or any other skin treatments within 5–7 days of your wedding. You could experience breakouts or skin rashes.

Don’t try new products one month before your wedding. Again, breakouts can be a real issue.

Don’t get a perm less than two weeks before your wedding. It takes at least two weeks for the curls to relax to a more natural looking curl.

Don’t go to a new person for hair color. Make sure you have seen their work and ability months prior to your big day.

Thanks for spreading the MUA gospel to brides, Jiladair. I abso cringe when I see photos from real brides in badly applied make up, or worse, not enough make up, to make their features pop in the camera. Most do not understand that you don't wear the same face to date night as you do in front of the Flash. And I agree--this should not be a last-minute plan. I tell all the brides who contact me at herecomestheguide.com that hair and make-up are part of the overall wedding fashion picture. Besides, what gal doesn't love a make-over?

Great article. I am an Independent Mary Kay Beauty Consultant and personally know Ms. Carlson. She is a fabulous make-up artist and I have worked with her in the past. You will love what she can do for you!
