The following questions will help you decide which makeup items you actually want and/or need in your cosmetic wardrobe. In the same way you define your skin type, there are basic questions you need to ask yourself to define your makeup needs.
1. When do I wear makeup? When do I want to wear makeup?
2. What is my skin tone, hair color and style, and eye color?
3. What are the makeup colors I love on me?
4. What are the colors I dislike on me?
5. What are the colors in my wardrobe (break this down into seasons of the year if your wardrobe rotates)?
6. What is my style of dress (casual, professional, night club, night at the opera)?
7. What is the range of makeup looks I require? The three basic looks are soft and natural, professional and finished, and glamorous and dramatic. Of course there are gradations between these looks, but these are good ranges to work with.
8. Do I need one, two, or all three of these looks in my cosmetic wardrobe?
9. How much time am I willing and able to give to the application of each look?
Answering the above questions will help to trim your makeup bag. It is best if you write down your answers so you can use this worksheet when you choose your products.
