Do You Have a Favorite [Secret] Fragrance?

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (View Profile)

In this month’s Scent Sommelier column, Jesse Rutherford shares her delicious discovery of Mistral’s new line of eau de parfum. While we may all have our favorite big-name fragrance designers, it’s often the small, lesser-known designers like Mistral that allow us the freedom to express our fragrance personalities. Do you have a secret fragrance designer? Are you a Chanel No. 5 girl or do you have a special and secret fragrance designer you love? Pray share your fragrance secrets!

I know this doesn't concern men, but I love the variety of scents women adorn. Me personally, I prefer the ladies that wear (no pun intended) "Lady Stetson". As for myself, I slap on a little splash of "Stetson for Men", but most of the time it's faithful "Old Spice Aftershave"...third generation user.

For about twelve years, or possibly more, I have been wearing the same fragrance. I have been told it is what I need to use, because it "matches me". The fragrance is Lalique. It has become more difficult to find the past few years. I read several years ago that if you can smell the fragrance on yourself, it is wrong for you. I cannot smell this on me. I love the way it smells going on, makes me feel all girlie and feminine. I think perfume is an expression of how you think of your most personal self. Even if you love baby lotion, vanilla, lemon or almond extract. I can recall when I first got to dab a bit of my sister's perfume on my skin and how special it made me feel, when I was a child. My skin is the kind that certain fragrances on, will "explode" in a cloud of it's scent. One drop and I can turn the heads of an entire auditorium!!! Not what I want to do.....now, my sister would love that!! Go figure.
In the summer I don't wear too much scent. I get eaten alive by mosquitoes! If anything, it's cocoa butter on occasion. In the winter, I am a big fan of "Almond Glow," a body oil by Home Health as well as "Cashmere Mist" by Donna Karan, though I'm too cheap to buy it. The Body Shoppe has some great vanilla scents too. I have serious memory attachments with scents, so I've abandoned some over the years.
I am pretty much a perfume junkie but there's a lot I can't wear anymore due to allergies. This includes my old faves Chanel No. 5 and Oscar (boo hoo). What I can wear without reaching for the inhaler: Floret by Antonia's Flowers (www.antoniasflowers.com). Honeysuckle & Jasmine by Jo Malone. Mille et Une Roses by Lancome. All florals on the lightish side, although Mille et Une Roses is a bit heavier. What I like about them is that they're not old fashioned or sickly sweet. All the Jo Malone fragrances are designed to mix with others in her line, so you create a scent that's pleasing to you. On a chilly day I can still wear Marc Jacobs or Fracas by Robert Piguet (yes, the original heavy tuberose scent. Proof I'm crazy). The trick is to spray the scent in front of me and walk through the mist so I get just a bit of the scent. Where thare's a will, there's a perfume bottle! I also recommend luckyscent.com, it's a cheap way to try out scents and no great loss if I can't wear it.

Since my 20's (i'm 49 now), I appreciated the beautiful fragrance "Coco" by Chanel.

Recently i've been tracking down the retro fragrance "Chemere" - oh how i've wished i got cases. What started out 20 yrs ago for 4.99 is now $50+ ... when you can find it!

While still faithful to Coco, i've recently experienced found "Chance" (also by Chanel) and CASHMERE MIST For Women By DONNA KARAN. Both are a better choice for day wear ;)
