The Marathon Experience: How Co-Workers Became Close Friends

“She started talking about him and it gave us the energy to accelerate,” Laura said. “We ran as fast as we could, and we did that for our colleague’s brother who is serving our country.”

The pair finished the marathon in just under five hours.

After the race, the group met at an appointed spot near the finish line. They ate hamburgers and swapped stories. They celebrated that everyone they started with crossed the finish line. Next up: Naps. Then, dinner at a Chicago restaurant.

“It was a very powerful experience,” Laura says. She is organizing another race group for 2007, though it likely will be a shorter distance so more people can participate in the bonding experience.
