I got a seat today; this allowed me some time to clarify observations. While San Francisco is quite a diverse community, at least in what people choose to wear, certain things keep us the same. You can often define which neighborhood one might reside in by their choice of street-wear; it’s a nice way to keep things interesting around here. But regardless of which neighborhood you reside in, there is definitely a J-Church uniform, that includes but is not exclusive to the following:
- In hand, a hot cup of coffee from your local café.
- The essential ipod with white earbuds, most probably with NPR’s Fresh Air podcast downloaded from their home wireless network.
- A semi-glazed over yet ‘I'm important and I have important things on my mind’ look.
- Stylized computer bag often with the logo of the company you just started patched on. A few years ago these patches included Yahoo, Google, Wired, and Ebay. Not everybody makes it to the millionaire club, but a lot of people around here give it their best shot. With so many success stories on the same train, its hard not to go for it.
- Another mobile device to constantly mind for phone calls, texts, and emails that one cannot miss. Talking loudly will be frowned upon.
- The latest sunglasses pulled over your hair, although some choose not to take this step and leave their eyes covered. I forgive this move on Mondays and Fridays.
- Commuter Shoes. Trendy boots if you get on before the Mission area, otherwise its used Converse All-Stars. Bonus points for rare colors and imported shoelaces. These shoes often come with a mesh hat with an elusive statement on it.
- Intellectual reading material, The Sunday NYT or the Economist will always do, as will the San Francisco Chronicle.
- Did I say ipod?
