I have an idea. A business/product idea.
Actually, it's not the first time I've had an idea. I thought of a plastic tarp that comes pre-taped with diaper-like-strips so you can ease the process of covering your floors; graph paper for walls so you can line up your hanging by ‘pre-holing’ the holes in the walls (Yes, home improvement has been on my mind. No, turns out neither of this ideas are original).
But this one, as simple as it is, I think might just work. And I thought of it once before but kind of sat on it, thinking it didn't have legs. Mentioned it to my boyfriend in passing and never brought it to the next level. Just sat. Ignored it. Let it collect dust.
And then today, for some odd reason, it came back – the idea I originally had 6 months ago that I ignored. And all the pieces as to how it might work and why it might actually work well have been haunting me ever since. The idea passed the acid test. I called my three board members on my way home from work: my father, my boyfriend, and my nineteen year old sister. All three gave positive reviews. My father, CEO of a non-profit and conservative risk-averse business man, responded best, “That's not a bad idea,” which in my book translates to “it could be good.” He followed the question with, “But how would you get it going?” to which I responded, “Dad, it's still just an idea.”
But it's an idea that has legs of its own, because now I'm up at 12:20 in the morning, (knowing that I have to get up to return to the daily grind in six hours) not quite writing a business plan but writing the outline of one, not exactly building out the financial forecast but playing around with the #s on a high-level, thinking through my mission, my values, my target market, my products... just not stopping.
I can't help but think just how cool this could be. How I could be an entrepreneur. How I could start something that has a vision more than just making money. How I could build something that both supports me but does something good and valuable for others.
How excited I am to be excited by something!

Idea!
