1) When did you start working in online advertising/marketing? And what was your first job?
I started working at NCR in 1994. While online advertising didn’t exist then, we were using Beta versions of Microsoft and Netscape tools to build internal websites. We built intranet sites and web interfaces to enterprise applications before names for it existed.
2) Since then, what companies have you worked for in the ad biz?
AmericanGreetings.com is the most traditional by definition. I have also worked for ATT where I sold data networks including secured internet connections in the late nineties. I also worked at Lubrizol where I worked on the global strategy for supporting customers using online tools.
3) In each job/position what were the most important things you learned?
We have the same challenges today with data integrity and deployment of web based applications as we did over 10 years ago. Training and embracing process change are the fundamental differentiators between success and failure.
4) What would you say is your specialty in this biz?
Since I have been in this business for so long, I have a unique perspective to bring to companies’ as they look to develop an overall e-marketing strategy. I have experience in most aspects of online marketing; however, I’m most passionate about website redesigns, web analytics, web surveys, and email marketing.
5) What made you decide to start On Mark Solutions?
I wanted to re-gain control over my life and my work schedule. I also felt that timing was right for companies and their interest level in pursuing online projects more regularly.
6) What does On Mark Solutions do?
We provide overall marketing consulting that utilizes technology tools to accomplish the end result. We help companies setup marketing programs to better leverage their website, email marketing, web surveys, web seminars, and more.
7) Who would be your ideal client?
We typically look for a mid-sized company in any industry that feels there is missed opportunity online for marketing as well as a company who wants to increase the frequency of their customer and prospect communications. The big factor is that the company has to be ready to try something new.
8) Do you have to travel a lot for work, and if so to where?
I try not to travel because I have 2 small kids and a third on the way. I’ve mostly traveled to conferences.
9) What tips do you have for being a successful business owner and mother of (soon-to-be) 3 kids?
I compartmentalize my time. I have a set schedule where I work and a set schedule for personal things. I try not to let the two intermingle too much.
10) What is your favorite website and why?
Google – I search for everything, both business and personal.
11) On a scale from 1 – 10 how do you think the women in our industry are treated? -10 being the best and 1 being the worst. Why?
8 – There are a lot more women in technology and tech-marketing today than ever before. While we are still a minority, I think there is plenty of opportunity to participate as equals. Also, the tech field is a lot more open minded about creative work arrangements and having the technology to be efficient from any location. This really plays into life-balance needs.
12) What do you do for fun?
I like to do sports and exercise activities. I also like to travel a lot.
13) If you could change anything about the search engine marketing business what would it be and why?
It would be great to have a “real” view into the actual search results and activity by search engine. There are many different tools out there for this information but the information often contradicts itself.
14) Who is the person who most influenced your life and why?
I guess in some ways I have to say my children. My children served as the catalyst for starting OnMark Solutions because I needed more flexibility. But, they have also taught me that everything and everyone runs at their own pace. Everyone doesn’t operate at my high strung, type A, pace. I definitely view my business relationships differently now that I have kids.
15) What advice would you like to give to the women in our biz?
Just go for it!!!
