My Job: Hunting Britney

He looked me in the eye.

“Yes,” he said. “I am.”

I nearly choked.

“Oh, wow, oh,” I sputtered. “I was at your house today!”

Smooth move, Christy.

He looked at me a little quizzically, but stayed friendly.

So I launched into some questions about Britney. “Hey, so I hear Britney was in town. Did you guys get together and do some work?”

“No,” he said casually. “She was here, yeah, but I didn’t get together with her.”

Then he went on to tell me where she was staying, why she was in town (to get away from LA and the paparazzi for a couple of days and relax) and that they’d most likely work together here or in LA sometime, but right now she had a lot to work on.

I began to sense I was really wearing out my welcome, so I thanked him and hustled out of the gym.

At about 9:30 p.m., just in time for the 10 p.m. deadline, I called my editor in New York and shocked the hell out of her with the news I got. She was thrilled, and thanked me for all my hard work.

Steve and I went for celebratory drinks.

Maybe next time, I’ll actually find Britney.

Check out the issue of US Weekly featuring Heidi Montag and her “revenge plastic surgery” on the cover. Flip to the Britney Spears story, and then follow the text to the end. You’ll see, in teensy-tiny type, my name as a contributor.

So the adventure ends on a positive note. For me, anyway; Britney just lost custody of her kids.

And I’m left feeling a little bit dirty, but a whole lot entertained.

Next up: Covering the BET Hip-Hop Awards for the magazine.

On Saturday, October 13, 2007, I’ll be on the red carpet, hassling people like T.I., Diddy, Fiddy, Luda, Kanye, and the legendary KRS-One, whom I saw perform in New York more than fifteen years ago, if they show up.

Tune in here to see what happens this time!
