I Borrowed Money from My Mother

By: Patti Ghezzi (View Profile)

Now that I’ve broken down and borrowed money from a parent, I can see advantages to doing so. In some cases, a loan can enhance a mother-daughter relationship.

Mothers want to do things for their children. They have a primal need to take care of their own. But as we grow older and more independent, mothers have fewer opportunities. Instead they dread the day old age will force them to accept help from their children. Mothers need to be needed, and it’s silly to let pride stand in the way of asking for help.

For my mom, all she has to do is take a look at her granddaughter, who breaks into a grin when she sees her Nana and adds a new fat roll to her thighs every day. I don’t think my mom could have come up with a better way to invest her money.

As a mother, I can relate to how it feels to be able to help the kids, in any way. I'm lucky enought to be able to help now and then, and it means a lot to me. Few were around when I needed help, but they did what they could, just the same. Pay it forward. You never know when you might need someone to return the favor! Tianca
