Is Your Family’s Food Bill Out of Control?

By: Caroline Wilbert (View Profile)

My husband and I spend a small fortune at restaurants. Between two jobs and two kids, we just don’t have time for cooking, and it is so easy to walk to our local pizza place. If we saved all the money we spend on meals out, we could probably pay for our children to go to Harvard.

How often do you go out to eat? Do you feel as guilty as I do about the indulgence?

I feel totally guilty, and it's an ongoing struggle in my life, like trying to save more money and lose more weight. The problem is, in NYC you can actually have Chinese or Mexican food for less than it would cost you to buy and cook it. Plus, it takes a lot of time to shop, cook, and clean up. The things that continue to motivate me are the desire to buy organic and eat more healthy food.
My boyfriend and I are trying to ween ourselves off of takeout, which we do about twice a week sometimes. I thought moving out of the city would help, but not really! We spend too much money and end up eating unhealthy stuff, which I do feel guilty about. Lately we've been trying to go to Trader Joe's at the beginning of the week, plan out a few easy menus, and stock the fridge. Just having food around is incentive for us to cook.
