Rain, Rain, Come Today: My First Year in NYC

By: Tracy Lynn (View Profile)

Okay, the weather forecast says rain, rain, rain … all week. I have no gear for nasty weather since I have traveled my last twelve years in a car.

So yesterday, I make my way down Third Avenue on the hunt for a trench coat or something water-repellant. I go about twenty blocks or more and even cut over to Lex and still nothing. I make my way back and go into Banana Republic, which was the first place I thought of and the last place I shopped! Well at least I got my exercise.

I walked into the Banana—and there they were, beautiful, stylish and chic … raincoats!  Yea! Anyone who really knows me will understand because I love coats. And I got to buy yet another one! I didn’t get to wear but a few coats in Atlanta, and here there are so many temperatures and different kinds of days, I look forward to wearing them all.

The suede vintage coat that was my mom’s. The very cool trendy down jacket with the big hood. The cute little vinyl blazer. The Kashmiracle Value Village find that was $13. Oh and I can’t forget my favorite ever … a chartreuse green Adam Ant look-alike! And yes, now a trench coat is added to the collection. Believe me, there are many, many more—and my husband knows that he cannot buy any coats since they will not fit in our New York apartment with all of mine!

Anyhow, so today I was very excited to wear my new digs to work in the rain. But of course it did not rain! So there I am in my sleek black attire, which includes the BR outerwear and not a drop! I looked ridiculous, ready for the weather that never came. No one had raincoats on this morning except two senior citizens—one in the subway and one in my building. How disappointing.

So on my evening commute, I am walking to 68th street to meet my other half at the train, and suddenly I notice tons of raincoats! It was only a slight drizzle, but my intuition had obviously paid off. I felt like a true New Yorker in my garb and now I will no longer dread the soggy days. Next on my list …
