Driving: A Mini Love Story

By: Monique Peterson (Little_personView Profile)

I believe in love at first sight. You know what I’m talking about: that sudden warm glow that starts from the heart and radiates through your whole body down to your toes. The fluttering palpations, the sweaty palms, the moonstruck eyes. I remember the moment it happened: April, 2002 at the New York Auto Show. I got behind the wheel of my first Mini Cooper, and I knew then and there we were meant to be together.

I sat behind the wheel of many cars that day, but when I buckled myself into the Mini, I felt like Goldilocks in Baby Bear’s bed: Just Right. For a compact car, it’s incredibly roomy. My 6-foot-two-inch tall friend sat in the passenger’s seat completely comfortable. After sitting in a Hummer, we both agreed there’s actually more room and comfort in the Mini. Plus, there’s the sleek design, the sporty console, the ability to customize everything about the car making it a total expression of you. What’s not to love?

As an appreciator of all things efficient, I was most impressed with how the Mini’s design allows for the maximum use of space in a minimum compartment. Granted, the Mini is best used as a two-seater, even though it does have a back seat. The choice is yours, however, and the back seats easily fold down to create a three-seater (which I recommend if you must have three adults in the car) or a two-seater which makes it great for hauling luggage, groceries, or whatever you might be carting around.

The best part of all is driving. The Mini has a tight turning radius which makes it super fun to drive on windy roads or make a quicky u-turn in a tight spot. It also has a very responsive throttle which makes it easy to pass a slow driver on a two-lane road, or get up to speed quickly when merging into traffic. Be warned: this car feels better the faster you drive it, and I for one, have a hard time keeping it under 100 mph when I’m on the open road.

I love Minis and always have. My Mom had one of the originals and that's when my obsession started. The new Minis are way different, which is what you get when German efficiency (and costs) gets involved! BMW bought the brand and reintroduced the Mini in 2002. 2007 saw a size increase of about 2 inches for safety reasons and the Clubman is due to be introduced in 2008 (so they say) I have a 2007 Cooper S and I love it, love it, love it. It's like driving a combination of a Go Kart and a bottle rocket: a speedy, bumpy fun ride. I drove from San Francisco to Ashland OR with a 6' 5" friend when I first got it, and we had a blast. He was totally comfortable and had more than enough head and leg room. The faster you go the smoother the ride gets, and it's hard to stay under the spped limit, because the car could go all day and all night at 100+. The integrated bluetooth and the iPod hookup (both optional) are fab. No problems so far and I hope to keep this car until I'm a speedy old lady!

Hi! I KNOW the feeling of "Love @ First Sight!" My daughter, now ten, wants a Mini Coop when she goes to college, which is in about 4 years (being as though she's in an accelerated program). When we 1st saw the Coop, we knew we had to have one! It's foreign look and it's compactibility all make up for the somewhat hefty price tag! But, it's worth every penny!!!... Coming from a VW Cabrio Convertible to a Acura RSX sport series, I think that a Mini Cooper would be the obvious next of choice!!!... None the less, I believe that until you own a Mini Coop, fantasizing about it will only give you half the experience! My suggesstion: AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, LIVE OUT YOUR DREAMS! N'JOY!

The mini is a terrible car! I have never had so many problems with a car in my life. It is always with one electrical problem or another and it costs an arm and a leg to fix it..Only mini technicians can work on it and every part is insanely expensive. It's a marketing coup and a consumer rip-off.

I think the real reason I joined Zipcar awhile back was just to have at the Mini. My favorite part (other than all the bonus points you mentioned above)? The cheese cloth blocker that pulls over the sun roof, making it open to let in the air, minus the sound that makes it hard for you to chat to your buddy when you're blasting the stereo while flooring it to 100. Yeah, baby.
