Spirits of Free

By: Leo Shelton (View Profile)

Spirits of free
Flowing from me
Of rhythms and words
I’ve already heard
Soulful stitches
Of new flags waving
Taking me back to better days

Nikki is pulling at my social consciousness
Langston has proclaimed my place among others like me
And Maya…..oh Maya has made it ok to be …
A spirit flowing free

Gordon’s pictures,
The Duke’s passion,
Ella’s melodies,
are defining me.
In a way that only Dunbar could articulate

Sing Billie!
About the blues I’ve lived
Or the loves I’ve had
And lost

Borrowed words from Essex
And scats from Sarah
Soulfully stitching together some sense of life
With the life clarity of Martin

I’m waving my new profoundness
I’m building a quiet riot in my head
And in my heart
A new renaissance
That empowers my spirit

Of all of your rhythms
And all of your words
That I’ve heard
Cause they take me back to better days
And move me forward
To new freedoms
And spirits of free
