(At the same time.) Little Boy: “No.” Little Girl: “Yes.”
Daddy: “And glued it back together?”
(At the same time.) Little Boy: “Yes.” Little Girl: “No.”
[Mommy walks in the room.]
Daddy: “Ok, Mommy’s here now. Mommy, did you break the turtle?”
Mommy: “What? The turtle is broken? What happened?”
Daddy: “That’s what I’m trying to find out. So, did you break the turtle?”
Mommy (looking at her two kids, who look guilty and scared): “Um, yes, I did. And I tried to glue it back together.”
[Both kids look relieved. Mommy takes the turtle and glues the foot back on properly.]
ACT II
[The next day, turtle is missing. Daddy is in the living room, searching high and low for the turtle. Once again, he is on the floor kneeling by the fireplace.]
Daddy: “Kids, come in here. Where’s the turtle?”
[Little Girl and Little Boy come into the room.]
Little Girl: “What?”
Daddy: “The turtle. It’s gone. Do you know where it is?”
Little Girl: “No.”
Daddy: “What about you?” (turns to Little Boy) “Do you know where the turtle is?”
Little Boy: “No.”
Daddy: “Ok, I’m going to give you both spankings if you don’t tell me the truth. Where is the turtle?”
Little Boy: “It ran away.”
Little Girl: “It got sick.”
Daddy: “It got sick? Where did it go?”
Little Boy: “It’s scared.”
Little Girl: “It’s hiding.”
Daddy: “If it’s hiding maybe you should find it.”
Little Boy: “It’s in a race.”
Little Girl: “It’s in a time-out.”
Little Boy: “It’s being naughty and not very nice.”
Daddy: “Now I don’t believe you.”
Little Girl: “Maybe Mommy took it.”
Little Boy: “Mommy said she took it.”
Daddy: “I’m getting nowhere.”
Little Boy: “You’re not being very nice.”
[Mommy walks in carrying the turtle.]
Daddy (to Mommy): “You had the turtle?”
Mommy: “Yeah, I didn’t want the kids to break it again before the glue dried.”
Daddy: “You had the turtle all along?”
Mommy: “I just told you that I did.”
Daddy: “Why didn’t you tell me?”
