The Turkey’s on the Front Porch?

A few seconds of silence filled the night air before Bubba said, “Seems to me, some people need remindin’ of the need to give thanks.” He gave a chuckle and continued, “They’re in such a hurry these days they only gave themselves one day a year to be thankful too!”

“Don’t everybody say grace a-fore they eat?” Bobby Dale asked.

“Some do and some don’t,” Ben answered quickly.

“Jess like us, it sounds like,” Bobby Dale said, then immediately realized he had made the mistake of putting us in the same category as big city folks.

“Bobby Dale, I will ‘nore that dumb comment,” Bubba said with a grimace.

“Bobby Dale, ya say somethang like that again and me and ya are a-gonna have us a free-fer-all,” Uncle Ben said seriously.

“Bobby didn’t mean nothin’ by that, he jus’meant some people pray ‘fore meals and some don’t,” I reminded the group.

“That’s ‘zactly what I meant,” Bobby Dale responded, thankful for a why out of the mess he was in.

“Let me see if I have this right,” Bubba said, “ya mean, the first pilgrims didn’t eat turkey, the Holiday was started by Yankee poultry farmers after that Sherman feller beat us, and some folks need a National Holiday to remind them to be thankful.”

“Yep, Bubba, that’s ‘bout it. I do believe ya hit the nail on the head,” I replied as I emptied my ice tea glass with a gulp.

“Strange. Did I ever tell ya guys what I read ‘bout Christmas a few years back?” Uncle Ben asked with a big smile on his face.
