Film: Art or Porn?

By: Amanda Coggin (View Profile)

If there are artistic aspects to porn, porn might be another vehicle for opening up our minds—just as art does. A listener, calling into “Philosophy Now,” reflected upon having had that very experience while he was acting in porn: “It is acting” (which many might consider art). “It is a fantasy world to stimulate other people’s sexual prowess. It has opened me up as a person, because of my openness through sexuality.” If we remove the prejudices and judgments of our ingrained moral values and beliefs, isn’t that the sort of experience we seek as we read about or view new worlds (whether in paintings, books, or films)? I always hope that, at the very least, I’ll be given an opportunity to witness an exciting event, have a profound experience, open up, and see what it takes for me to reconsider everything.
