SNL! Bitch Is the New Black

NBC’s first post-strike Saturday Night Live, hosted by former cast member and head writer Tina Fey, delivered solidly political material, and was rewarded with the show’s highest overnight rating in two years, up 36 percent from the show’s pre-strike average this season.

The show presented a spoof of the latest CNN debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, riffing off the concept that the media is “totally in the tank” with Obama. Kristen Wiig, portraying Campbell Brown, visibly orgasmed after hearing Obama’s response to a question from Jorge Ramos (identified on screen as “Univision Anchor/Obama Stalker,” and played by Will Forte): “Are you mad at me? … I was afraid you might be mad at me because, you know, all the shilling for you in my campaign coverage has been so obvious, and because I spend every night sitting in front of your house in a parked car.” The panelists then ignored and insulted Hillary Clinton, played by Amy Poehler.

The program also featured an extra-long “Weekend Update,” in which Fey went as far as network policy would permit in what was essentially a live, on-the-air endorsement of Hillary Clinton. In a segment called “Women’s News,” Fey announced, “It’s a great time to be a lady in America!” and welcomed the presence of “our first, serious female Presidential candidate.” Next, Fey questioned the arguments of Hillary-haters:

  • Hillary can’t “control” Bill, and Americans would end up with “co-Presidents” in the White House: “Because that would be terrible, having two intelligent, qualified people working together to solve problems, uggh—why would you let Starsky talk to Hutch?!”

  • Hillary’s physical appearance (especially, Rush Limbaugh’s comments that Americans are not ready to watch their President “turn into an old lady in front of them”): “Really? They didn’t seem to mind when Ronald Reagan did that.”

  • Hillary is a bitch: “Yeah… she is … And so am I—and so is this one! [pointing to Amy Poehler, who says, “Yeah, deal with it.”] You know what? Bitches get stuff done. So I’m sayin’ it’s not too late Texas and Ohio, get on board! Bitch is the new black!”

  • Fey’s statements have incensed online users in chat rooms and forums everywhere, countered by an equal amount of vocal gratitude from Hillary supporters for succinctly identifying the attitudes they feel are distorting the contest.

You said it, Midori. We were cracking up when I heard Tina tell it like it is, but with this story I realize the gravity of the situation, and I am even more pissed about Nader coming in again with his super-ego to screw things up again. I am much less cynical this election, but twice as frightened!
