Must-Have Playlist: Sundance 2008

By: Gen Art Pulse (View Profile)

Download, listen, and pretend that you’re surrounded by celebs in big, puffy jackets.

Yes, I could tell you about how I can’t wait for you to see American Teen Or Choke. Or the handful of movies that everyone in Park City was buzzing about. I could also tell you about our Jason Reitman-hosted fete for Seven Fresh Faces in Film or emerging filmmaker Robert Kirbyson, the winner of our Delta Fly-In Movies competition. But I’m not going to do any of that. Instead, I’m going to hand deliver you some of the best indie sounds to come out of Park City this year.

If you were there, I hope these song bring back fond memories; if you weren’t, close your eyes, turn down the thermostat and discover your new favorite bands. Download our latest Must-Have Playlist and enjoy!

1. Ha Ha Tonka, “St. Nick on the Fourth in a Fervor”
This Missouri-bred indie honky tonk band, who played for us in Chicago last year, had all of Main Street stompin’ in their snow boots.

2. Sea Wolf, “Middle Distance Runner”
Inspired by Jack London, Los Angeles-based Alex Church has a dreamy, super-mellow sound that played well to the throngs at the Music Cafe.

3. Sondre Lerche, “Airport Taxi Reception”
After digging his soundtrack for Dan In Real Life, we weren’t surprised to run into our favorite Norwegian singer/songwriter playing in Park City.

4. Sara Bareilles, “Love Song”
Before she heads on tour with James Blunt, this next generation Norah Jones stopped in to play a stripped down version of her poppy single.

5. Meiko, “How Lucky We Are”
A waitress at L.A.’s famed Hotel Cafe, this pretty folk songbird delivered a dreamy acoustic set that cast a spell over the entire crowd.

6. Ingrid Michaelson, “Far Away”
The unsigned indie pop sensation has been on radar ever since her song was featured in the dramatic season finale of Grey’s Anatomy.

7. Quincy Coleman, “Calling Your Name”

We had heard that this L.A. talent fuses everything from country to ragtime in her genre-bending music, but we didn’t believe it until we saw her live.

8. Gold Streets, “End Transmission”

This New York-based rock band has a powerful psychedelic sound that feels way more intense than its three members.

9. Orba Squara, “Perfect Timing (This Morning)”
Yes, they play that catchy song from the iPhone commercials. Yes, it sounded even more charming when we heard it live.

10. Dusty Rhodes and the River Band, “Dear Honey”
This band out of Anaheim was the only act we’d never heard of before catching their performance. Turns out, they were also our favorite!
