Finding a Hobby

4. How much money are you willing to invest?
We had to get there sooner or later. Hobbies (although not all) generally require some money to start. There are some that have an initial cost and from there out they are relatively cost free. Others require a little money here and there or some you can just keep pouring money into. Do a little homework so you know if you’re picking a hobby that fits your budget—if it doesn’t fit, don’t get discouraged just know that you may have to start slower or get creative.

Some examples: Painting can be pricey to start out; however, once you’ve purchased the supplies you can get by buying small things here and there. Drawing can be almost free, just grab a paper and pencil!  Later you can branch out and buy more supplies if you enjoy it.

Now that you’ve thought everything out and have some sort of idea what you’re looking for, where can you get information to get started? The internet is a fantastic resource!  You can find patterns and how-to instructions for just about anything with a quick search. Your local library and/or bookstore are also a great place to start.  If you have something that you think you may be interested in, check out a book and read up a little.

Here are some hobby sites to get you started:

Find My Hobby

Remember if you don’t like the hobby you pick, you can pick another. You do not have to pick baking or sewing just because you’re a woman. If you think you might like to build model airplanes or rebuild engines—go for it! Most of all, remember that chances are you will not be perfect the first time around. You may never be perfect at what you pick, but if you enjoy it then you’ve found a hobby.

In October 2007, I discovered a new hobby. It's been a great joy for me, an essential outlet for a greater purpose ... that being writing on DivineCaroline's website. I must admit, I was at first leery, since it was an e-zine for women, but I've found all the editors to be encouraging and thoughtful.
It feels good to write.

Your stories, musings, and advice are welcome here. We know you've got something to share, so jump in—maybe get a little famous. And don't worry—you can save a draft!
