My Brother-in-Law’s Collections ...

By: Jeanne Bean (View Profile)

Finally, she had had enough ... she broke the news to him ... these things HAD to go!! It was either G.I. Joe, or his wife!! “Hmmm,” he thought aloud … with a little giggle to his voice ... “Dave, these things are worth NOTHING, if they’re sitting in the basement!!” she advised him. Honestly ... and I thought to myself ... “you know what ... she’s right!!” ... They’re worth absolutely NOTHING, sitting in this finished basement!!! It’s only when you “Sell them on Ebay” that they gain a value!! Not when sitting ... gathering a thin layer of dust, in a pile, in their beautifully finished off basement. Not a dime!! Dave had sat, thinking long and hard over her comments. She had a made a very valid point!! Maybe he should start ridding himself of some of these older books, figurines, matchbox cars, and baseball cards ... or maybe some of the comic books. But as he sat down, crossed legged on the floor, he found it more and more difficult to separate his memories! Because THAT is what he found was keeping him from thinning out his collections ... were his memories of his childhood. The friends that he had spend hours with, playing GI Joe with ... the buddies who he had traded baseball cards with for hours, Saturday afternoons!

It wasn’t the value of the “items’ themselves ... it was the value he had placed on the memories, of the fun and delight he had, all those years ago ... with his buddies and pals!

Now, in their new home, he has added a special room ... one dedicated to his “collections.” It holds material things, yes .... but it also holds something that not even money can buy ... memories.
