Irish Superstitions

Dishwashing Superstitions
“If you get your shirt wet while doing dishes, it means you’ll marry a drunk.” Not the most uplifting of superstitions, seeing as most of us do tend to get our shirts wet when doing dishes. But hey, in case you do marry a drunk, I guess this superstition could help you explain how you got into the situation. “If a tea towel drops, it means you’ll receive an unexpected visitor.” So you might want to change out of your pajamas—because nine times out of ten, this has been proven accurate for me.

Weather Superstitions
When it’s raining and the sun breaks through, my mother always said, “The devil is beating his wife.” I really don’t understand how that would impact the weather, but now I say it each time, too. Yes, I’ve received some strange looks from strangers.

Itchy Superstitions
“If your left hand itches, it means you will receive money. If your right hand itches, it means you will make a new friend; and if your nose itches, it means either someone is gossiping about you, or you’ll hear news.”

So there’s a taste of the Kennedy cannon of Irish superstition. This is actually the first time I’ve written them down—hopefully there’s no superstition about that.

I’d think twice about rolling your eyes, because … you never know.

I enjoyed this. I'm nearly finished writing a novel about WWI and Ireland, filled with superstition and cave spirits predicting the Kennedy assassination and other disasters. The ancestor of Kennedy signed a treaty with the English invader, bringing down the curse on the family. When Kennedy went to Ireland, they gave him the treaty (to get rid of it) and he brought it to Washington -- he was dead within 3 months. Things always comes in 3s. Another superstition. The Fitzgeralds have a curse going back many generations too. They were landlords. You can read my novel on thenextbigwriter. Nora's Farewell. Nadine

Thanks Laura, I hadn't heard a lot of these and the pole one is interesting. The true test of my newfound superstition will be next time I walk around a pole with friends.
