Shaving Off My Manliness

By: Andrew J. Bernstein (View Profile)

So it was my own vanity, and not any manufactured cycling-related excuse, that ultimately led me into my current position on the living room floor. The sport was just an enabler. I was lured into the deliciously painful world of waxing by the promise of quick and easy hair removal—and more importantly, weeks and weeks of smooth legs—all without touching my razor.

What I failed to realize is that while each yank on the paper strip might be a quick motion, the process of applying the wax and smoothing out the strip takes quite a bit of time. Becky and I spent about five hours—over three evenings—ripping hair out of my legs. It took two full tubs of wax and more than forty paper strips. How I screamed.

So was it worth it? Well, I suppose we won’t know for sure for a few weeks, when we’ve seen how long it takes my hair to return.

For the time being, my legs hurt. A lot. I wish I’d shaved.

Hi Andrew, I would like to make a helpful comment about your story about waxing your legs versus shaving. I am a licensed esthetician with 20 years of waxing under my hands. When I read that it took you and your girl friend 5 hours! to wax your legs all I could think of was OUCH!... Waxing is all about technique. How one pulls the strip makes a big difference on how much discomfort is involved. A skilled esthetician would wax both your legs in one hour or less. And because a professional knows how to pull the strip less hair will be broken off at the skin line and more will come out by the root which is the whole idea of waxing and why the hair grows back weaker and weaker with subsequent waxing. Once your hair grows back 1/4 to one 1/2 inch long go treat yourself to a professional waxing. You will like the results.

I started shaving my legs (and arms!) when I was competing in bodybuilding, and the stubble was why I continued, combined with a healthy dose of vanity! I didnt care for waxing (mainly because you had to wait too long to re-wax), and depilatory creams we sort of hit and miss. I personally found that every time I shaved, it became easier. I shave daily now (sometimes twice a day on my arms) and razor burn is no longer an issue. Its nice to meet someone else who has cast off the chains of follicle related manhood and embraced the smooth life!
