Our feelings are like a detector. When they are positive, we are in alignment with who we want to be. When they are negative we are out of alignment.
In order for us to be able to manage through any kind of stressful or difficult situation, we need to be present and aware of these feelings. The trick is to be able reset them to something that feels better.
That is what our lucky charms do. However, we can do this for ourselves in any given moment.
Fast Track To Feeling Positive
The quickest way to feeling better is to find gratitude in that moment.
I have a few places where I feel nervous or fearful in the program. As I take each stroke I say thank you. I am thanking the universe, my teammates, our coach, our manager, my skates, the guy who drives the zamboni and the city for building the ice rink. Get the picture?
There is scientific evidence that the feeling of appreciation calms your primal fear based brain and opens up your ability to think clearly and manage yourself.
Being thankful plainly feels better and reconnects you to where you want to be in that moment. And, in that moment I want to be on my feet, smiling and enjoying the ride with my teammates!
Try It
Next time you start to feel a negative feeling creeping in try to find something to be grateful for in that specific moment. I guarantee you will feel a little bit better than you did the moment before. It will then be easier to move to an even better feeling from there, until you feel great!
Positive feelings attract more positive energy, that ultimately equals more joy.
