Who’s Been Your Greatest Inspiration Throughout Your Life and Why?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Every night I come home and turn on the evening news. At times it seems the world is in devastation and destruction. But today, and in the past, there have been individuals that have inspired and motivated me about what tomorrow will bring.

The greatest inspiration in my life was one of the actions Eleanor Roosevelt took as the First Lady. When she heard that the Daughters of the American Revolution were not letting Marian Anderson, an African American, sing at Constitution Hall, the First Lady removed any affiliation with the organization and then arranged for Ms. Anderson to sing at Lincoln Memorial. She could have ignored what was happening but she chose to take a very public stand on the issue.

We all can be inspired when hearing the stories of people who have done something out of the ordinary in this world. Is there someone who has inspired you and why?  Join the chit chat.

The giveaway ended May 23rd, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

My Grandmother was a great inspiration to me. She was an avid gardener and an artist. It took me years, but now I see the beauty of the world through what she taught me.

My mom an Irish immigrant through Ellis Island. Her mom left her due a blood clot on xmas eve when she was 7. Raised in an orphanage. Yes, sounds like a story, but true. She was a wonderful mom and dies at age 63 from esoph. cancer, and never smoked. (2nd hand from my dad) She taught me so many things, but most of all to never give up, and how to die with dignity. She died on 9-25-03 and on 9-25-04 my house caved in from Hurricane Jeanne. The electrician told me when rebuilding that it was a blessing as the house was old and a fire hazard. She was looking out for me even when she was not around. She was my push to get my M.S. and really do something with my life. My mom, Catherine Murtagh. Great woman.

My mother Lucy Gutman who has had an amazing life and is one tough cookie! She was raised in high Philadelphia Jewish society in th 30's 40's and 50's. She went to Wellsley and Bryn Marr colleges to graduate and master in social work at a time ( 1950's ) when women went to those colleges just to pass time while searching for husbands. My mom then on her own raised me working 3 jobs after her first husband left her as I was being born. I never realized we were practically dirt poor as my mom made my childhood the most amazing and exciting. She went through two marriages and an estranment from her only other child, her so. Meanwhile she continued to work, raise me and obtain 5 master degrees. Today at the age of 72 she is working on her PHD. She survived a number of life threatening illnesses which she deals with daily. She survived Hurricane Rita and made a move across country in a U-Haul van, again at 72 years old. She is the best mom a girl could have.
The greatest inspiration in my life was my grandmother who died back in January at the age of 92. Her husband died when my mother was 2 years old. My grandmother worked, took care of her aged parents, and raised my mother all by herself. She never drove a car and she walked to work everyday until her retirement. She was a wonderful cook and sewed beautifully. She made all of her and my mother's clothes until she was grown. She would later buy clothing because she could afford to. She quilted and made my sister and myself the most beautiful cathedral window quilts. She crocheted and made beautiful afghans. She loved to cook for people and sometimes she would cook for 10+ people. She truly enjoyed cooking for others. When I was child, she taught me to cook and was the most patient soul with me. My mother would get impatient with me but my grandmother never would. I miss my grandmother terribly but I know that she is in a better place and knowing her has impacted my life greatly.

Inspirations take many forms and come into our lives when needed. Early in my career I met another business woman who had achieved success in the same male dominated field I was entering. She had paved the way on a road not many females had travelled and now I was embarking on that same obstacle filled road with hills and deep ravines. There were times when I slipped and wanted to revert back to the safety of a more traditional female role. My friend wouldn't let me. She would say, "Just reach all the way down to your toenails and pull up that courage. You can do it. I will help you." Time after time she did this, not just for me, but for many other business women. Never did she say "I did it". She would always just say, "You can do it. I'll help you." Now, 25 years later my mentor and friend is in a nursing home because her body fails her. Her eyes sparkle, her advice uplifting and her spirit continues to help me on my way!

The greatest inspiration in my life was my Aunt Ethel. She taught me that women have magic in them. They can take a kitchen with bare cupboards and make a delicious meal, that dandelions make a great soup or salad and that all children are wonderful, little midgets. Aunt Ethel out lived her three children but loved the role of excentric, loving aunt. In this busy world, I am so grateful that Aunt Ethel showed me the wonder of women and that being with nature takes time. Nature gives and never complains. So when I am tired of hearing people whine or complain, I go to the woods and commuticate with Nature. There is a reason she is called Mother Nature. She is Mother to many orphans like myself.
Aunt Ethel would have loved this web site!
