Who’s Been Your Greatest Inspiration Throughout Your Life and Why?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Every night I come home and turn on the evening news. At times it seems the world is in devastation and destruction. But today, and in the past, there have been individuals that have inspired and motivated me about what tomorrow will bring.

The greatest inspiration in my life was one of the actions Eleanor Roosevelt took as the First Lady. When she heard that the Daughters of the American Revolution were not letting Marian Anderson, an African American, sing at Constitution Hall, the First Lady removed any affiliation with the organization and then arranged for Ms. Anderson to sing at Lincoln Memorial. She could have ignored what was happening but she chose to take a very public stand on the issue.

We all can be inspired when hearing the stories of people who have done something out of the ordinary in this world. Is there someone who has inspired you and why?  Join the chit chat.

The giveaway ended May 23rd, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

My greatest inspiration is a friend I met when I started my first nursing job out of college. We are still friends over 30 years later. She is 7 years older than me but has been like a sister and mother. Whether I was raising my children, going through a separation, going through my oldest son's divorce or battling cancer, she always gave me the wisest advice on what to do. It came from the heart out of love and was never critical. I had the mother from hell so she was more like a mother to me than my own mother. My marriage survived, my children have all turned out well, the issues with my son's divorce have been resolved and I am still alive after having cancer 3 times. I owne so much of it to our Lord and to the angel he put in my life-her.

The person who continues to inspire me is my friend, Sheri. She had been a very active person all her life: extensive traveling, mountain climbing, biking, hiking and photography. She was injured in a climbing accident 8 years ago. She now gets around in a motorized wheelchair and is often in pain. But she continues to give back to others, volunteering, counseling and telling great stories.

I am inspired by my dad. He was raised in a poor family with 6 children. He wanted a better life for himself, and he put himself through college, living out of his car and eating peanut butter sandwiches for every meal. He worked hard to build a good life for his own children.

My grandma is my greatest inspiration. She is so intelligent, kind, understanding, has a great fighting spirit and lives life gracefully, no matter what.

My biggest influence has been my mom and grandmom.

My grandson's girlfriend is an inspiration. She was born with a mild form of spina bifida and was a very active child until the age of 13. She was given an option of surgery with the possibility of paralysis or no surgery with the strong possibility of infection and death at a young age. She chose the surgery and is now confined to a wheelchair. She is the mother of an active 5 year old son and greets every day with a smile. She is still prone to infections and several times a year she is hospitalized for treatments, some lasting several weeks.
In spite of her physical limitations and the constant pain she endures she is raising an intelligent and caring child. He is so aware of her limitations and he tries so hard to help her.
I am so proud to have her as a member of my family.

I found great inspiration through my mother who struggled all her life and raised my sister and I to be the successful women that we are today.

My mom is one of seven children and was in high school during the "Great Depression". She will be 92 years young next month. We were raised to "waste not, want not", to be careful with our resources, and taught to improvise with what you have. Mom always has a smile on her face and loves helping others in any way possible. I asked her the other day what was the one lesson she hoped she had taught us over the years and her answer was, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

This is a hard one for me to answer. With the current state of things, it is hard to find inspiration in people's actions. No one specific person comes to mind. Who I do admire and take inspiration from though, is anyone who stands up against oppression, inequality, and defies those who wish to usurp freedom and the right to happiness. There are too many places in this world where being able to speak your mind and pursue joy are nonexistant. It truly inspires me when I see those who are living in tyrannical situations speak out at the risk of their own lives to enable others. When I hear of these brave men and women, it inspires me to never take for granted all of the peace and beauty that surrounds me, and to always strive to improve the quality of life for as many people within my power. One person can change the world ;)
