Who’s Been Your Greatest Inspiration Throughout Your Life and Why?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Every night I come home and turn on the evening news. At times it seems the world is in devastation and destruction. But today, and in the past, there have been individuals that have inspired and motivated me about what tomorrow will bring.

The greatest inspiration in my life was one of the actions Eleanor Roosevelt took as the First Lady. When she heard that the Daughters of the American Revolution were not letting Marian Anderson, an African American, sing at Constitution Hall, the First Lady removed any affiliation with the organization and then arranged for Ms. Anderson to sing at Lincoln Memorial. She could have ignored what was happening but she chose to take a very public stand on the issue.

We all can be inspired when hearing the stories of people who have done something out of the ordinary in this world. Is there someone who has inspired you and why?  Join the chit chat.

The giveaway ended May 23rd, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

My mother was my greatest inspiration; she was truly a great human being. Although her life was not always easy, she kept a positive outlook and was the most loving, caring person I've ever known. She has been gone from this life since May 20, 1992 and although I still miss her terribly, I am so very thankful for having had her in my life.

My grandfather is my greatest inspiration - he lived in a great time that almost seemed magical. He is a WWII vet and he often speaks fondly of the times after the war. But to hear what he went through during the war and to be married to the same woman for 60 years and was so dedicated that he refused to put her in a home when she had alzheimers. He took care of her for 4 years until she passed away. A man that really knows what a commitment is, unlike so many people today.

My grandmother has been my greatest inspiration. They lived a very simple life yet always put her family first. She moved to the United States at the age of 16 by herself to live with family she had never seen yet she built a life for herself and her family. She believed and always told me how lucky I was and how much she loved me.

My husband, who tranformed himself from a 240 pound health-risk into a 160 pound triathlon machine all while caring for our two children and running a business out of our home in order to spend more time with the family.

One of the people I admire and who has inspired me is Sarah Ferguson (Fergie). I can only imagine what it was like for her to be part of the royal family of England. The press was horrid to her and so were others who supposedly had the social cultivation to know better. Through it all she stayed focused on what was important - her own self-worth and the welfare of her children. She made a life for herself in a different country, got a job to support herself, and stayed friendly with her ex. She also remained true to herself. The public was allowed to see both her good and not-so-good sides. There are few celebrities who could have come through it as well. I am truly inspired by her moral integrity and view her as a mentor for my own goals.

Father Damien who sacrificed everything to care for Hansen's disease patients on Kalaupapa. His example of compassion and sincere caring is a true inspiration to me.
My greatest inspiration was Onice Fields, my English teacher in high School. She taught me to understand and appreciate the writings of great authors and to express myself in ways that others can understand my true meanings and feelings. She taught me that any goal in life is attainable if you are willing to work to achieve it and not give up. We learned that all people evaluate people in different ways and there is not just one way. I was taught that you can live by rules and laws and bend them, but never break them. You do not have to live by Black and White, but live in the Gray area and be the best you can be. Appreciate others for who they are and do not always compare them to who you are. Remember life experiences make people who they are.

my mom is always my inspiration
My friend and mentor, Kellie Greene, is the greatest inspiration in my life. After suffering a brutal rape in 1994, instead of retreating and becoming a victim, she chose to use her experience as a springboard to help others. She began speaking publicly about her experience, including at universities, as well as assisting law enforcement professionals with victim sensitivity and how best to communicate with survivors of sexual violence. Through this, she realized that the greatest help she could offer would be to enable these women to make the transition from victim to survivor, then to “just being a person,” helping them become women who are emotionally strong and no longer defined by the rape ordeal. As a survivor of childhood rape and incest myself, she has given me the courage to speak publicly about my personal experiences and is always there for me regardless of her busy schedule. When I'm with Kellie, I'm not a victim or even a survivor... I'm a friend and just one of the girls!
