Who’s Been Your Greatest Inspiration Throughout Your Life and Why?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Every night I come home and turn on the evening news. At times it seems the world is in devastation and destruction. But today, and in the past, there have been individuals that have inspired and motivated me about what tomorrow will bring.

The greatest inspiration in my life was one of the actions Eleanor Roosevelt took as the First Lady. When she heard that the Daughters of the American Revolution were not letting Marian Anderson, an African American, sing at Constitution Hall, the First Lady removed any affiliation with the organization and then arranged for Ms. Anderson to sing at Lincoln Memorial. She could have ignored what was happening but she chose to take a very public stand on the issue.

We all can be inspired when hearing the stories of people who have done something out of the ordinary in this world. Is there someone who has inspired you and why?  Join the chit chat.

The giveaway ended May 23rd, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

I have been so fortunate to have been blessed to have several inspirational people in my life. The greatest of them all is my aunt skooky who just turned 82 years old. My aunt believed me in ways only a angel could. Twenty years ago found myself coming out of a residential state treatment program for chemical dependency, and the only person who would allow me to come live with them was my aunt skooky. Prior to treatment I was a thief, con-artist, whore, self centered, selfish , destructive, and I hated myself. My aunt believed in a junkie like me. My aunt loved, nutured and inspired me. I am forever grateful. She not only taught me about God's love; she also lived it. She really helped me believe again. Today I am college educated and currently working on my LCDC license. My life is so valuable. I have gained self respect and respect those around me. I have three beautiful children, and two grandchilren. I have a man who loves me for me. Remarkable...Deborah A

My daughter has been my inspiration because she has such a fierce and uncompromising desire to do what's right both for herself and for the world. I admire her ability to not bend under peer pressure and her ability to lead by example. She stretches herself daily to become a better person and she never settles for just average but pushes herself to her fullest to excel in her academics. She loves learning and has an insatiable thirst for knowledge. She shows me daily that life is what we make of it not what it makes of us.

I have two inspirations. My Mom and my Daughter. They have both been my best examples of how to live my life to the fullest.

My biggest inspiration in my life has to be my Dad. He was the most kind forgiving person I've ever known and there wasn't a day gone by where I didn't see him kiss my Mother and tell her he loved her.
He also had one favorite phrase of wisdom that he tried to enstill on all us kids and that was, "If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, then don't say anything at all". I have always remembered those words of advice and have tried my best to use it through out my life. Dad, I miss you, love you and think of you daily!

My biggest inspiration is a former boyfriend's mother. As a young woman she was left with 4 children, no money, no education when her husband suddenly to pursue an acting career. Instead of falling apart she picked herself up, went to college, worked split shif, had a nanny move in for room and board and a tiny stipend. Next thing you know she's a school teacher, owns her own home, has three children with college educations. Not a cent of welfare or any other handouts.

My husband would be. I was in an auto accident in 1990. Prior to that I was a vibrant, working mom of our three young children. After the accident I became a literal recluse for years. Our social life no longer existed. Today, I do get out some but I have not been able to work. He went through all those years accepting what happened and simply taking over when he needed. Not once did he complain about the woman he knew that no longer existed, that he now also had no social life nor the fact that he had to change jobs several times to be home more to take care of me, the kids and the house. He took pay cuts on each job. These events cost him and our family income a loss of over 40,000 a year. We had to sell our home and to this day still are renters. Not once did he complain or speak of the material things we lost nor the high paying - executive positions he at one time had. I only wish I could be as good a person had the situation be reversed.
