The Birthing Project USA

CM: How can others across the country become involved in your project?
KTH: There are several ways communities and women can get involved. Women can join or start a Birthing Project in their community; we have kitchen-table groups of ten women in some communities who decided to start one on their own, and larger groups supported by the March of Dimes Organizations in others. Community businesses or individuals can make a financial contribution to a local or the national Birthing Project.

Quarterly, we host a baby shower in New Orleans to support the women and babies who have been born since Katrina, because right now medical professionals and resources are still very sparse in the area. We are always looking for people to join us or to help sponsor the event with monetary or product donations.

Additionally, we are always looking to expand the organization and welcome the opportunity to speak at events.

CM: Are there currently any new programs in the works?
KTH: Yes, new projects are currently starting in Jacksonville, FL, Memphis, TN, and in Racine, WI.

CM: How many children do you have and what are their ages?
KTH: My husband and I have five adult children and six grandchildren, ranging in age from twenty-one years to thirteen months old. Because of my work, I have children all over the world, most of who refer to me as Mama Katt.

CM: Do they take part and support your efforts?
KTH: Yes, all of my children help by using their professional expertise to assist me from providing computer assistance, to evaluation expertise, to volunteer management consultation, to helping to raise money for our on-going fundraising efforts.

CM: How do you balance your time between work and family?
KTH: Balancing work and family is an ongoing battle. However, I schedule time with my grandchildren and children into my calendar, and try to go for a walk with my husband every day that I am home.

CM: What are some parting words you can share with our mom community?
KTH: As parents, we get to co-create the story of our child’s life. One day, she will be telling her story, describing her life—including her parents—we have an opportunity to consciously develop the person/the relationship/the plot. Once I realized that, I changed the way I interacted with my children.

CM: Thank you, Kathryn, for taking the time to conduct this interview. I wish you continued success in all your endeavors and hope to see you around ConnectingMoms!
