During tax season, rebate checks are often helpful in paying off a bill or putting money away. Some of us spend the money too. But do rebate checks really affect consumption and stimulate the economy as the White House seems to think? I believe it barely puts a dent in the economy and the money would be better spent on families of soldiers, vets returning from Iraq, education, healthcare, or poverty. What do you think?

If you get an extra 300 bucks outta the clear blue, then hell yeah you're goin' to spend it faster than you got it. Therefore, economic stimulus has been enacted and achieved.
being in the tax business, I see a unique perspective on this rebate - 1st, the lowest level of income receives, at most, $300 You need to have some type of taxable income to qualify for the $600 and those are the people most likely to blow it on stimulating the economy. Most middle income people who will get 600 - 1200 plus 300 per child are more likely to use it to pay down debt or towards savings or retirement - where's the stimulus in this?
I think the best stimulus package would be lowering gas prices then the average American can put that 200 A MONTH into something other than the gas tank!

I just feel this whole tax thing has gotten totally out of control. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. I am at the point that for basic things like food and car insurance and gas for my car is beyond expensive. There is no easy way out. And this "Bush money" as I call it, is only going towards the bills that I couldn't pay because of the price of everything else going up. Nothing is affordable anymore.

What makes me angry is that I was told that because I owe on student loans that not only will my federal tax return go to that debt but also my stimulus rebate check as well. Now in my opinion that is totally unfair. I mean how the hell are these rebate checks supposed to help those of us who owe debts. Its bad enough that come next year they will take what is rightfully my son's money since I will be claiming him as a dependant on my income tax. I don't know I see the whole thing as being a waste of time. I mean how many people will actually benefit from the rebates and how many will have to hand theirs over to the government for student loans.

How utterly ridiculous to try and make the American public think the Administration is giving something to it! Only to the ultra-rich, my friends! We may be the Great Unwashed to them but we are not completely stupid! All the time corporate oil is raking it in on gasoline prices, a typical $150 a month more to spend at the gas station affects all portions of life; grocery store included, and a big whopping hole in the poor budget of the working person who might even be losing a home. And no factories to fall back upon when another 80,000 a month are laid off without a job. Oh, I'm bitter for sure! Obama is right!
What about the $42 million it cost to send out the letters to tell people that they were possibly going to get a tax rebate (if they filed there 2007 taxes)? Why was that necessary?

Stimulate the economy? Puh-leeze. I just paid $1600 in addition to the 33% in taxes that comes out of my regular paycheck. Will that extra $450 I get next month make me go out and spend, spend spend? NO WAY! What a joke! I'm just living on my credit card for the next 2 weeks until I get another paycheck since my entire paycheck just went to taxes and student loans. Nice.

This hair-brained rebate/stimulus check act would have NEVER taken place had it not been an election year. The Republicans are scared to death of losing the White House. All this does it inflate our national debt to even more dizzying heights than it already is. Anytime there is an out of control deficit it is followed by inflation and an unstable stock market. Sound famaliar? That's because we already did this with Reaganomics. Trickle-down economic theory never works. History has proven it over and over again. So why do they keep doing it???? DUH!!!

The effectiveness of rebate checks and 'stimulus' checks in stimulating the economy will depend on whether the person receiving them uses them to purchase goods that would otherwise not have been purchased. Apropos of the suggestion, I like very much the idea of being able to donate it directly to a fund for military personnel.

Another case of he Congress buying votes! A lame duck President will gain naught by this, and only signed the Bill. The House proposes, and the Senate Affirms! When will you people get it!?
The burden is on our kids, and their kids.
A better and more permanent solution is to let us keep what we earned in the first place, and also tax the $2.6 TRILLION underground economy! Go study the plan that 217 economists and the GAO all endorse, that has stood the tests of fairness to ALL, That 242 Congress members have co-sponsored, and, that will lower costs by up to 30% (eliminate hidden taxes) on consumer goods! Go to fairtax.org!
I sure hope there are enough fed-up smart folks out here to push through the Fairtax Bill,
that will also repeal the 16th Amendment! Women should be the most supportive, due to their unfair taxation and sub-standard treatment visa vi taxation!
Duh!
