By: Lori Harfenist (View Profile)

Health care in the United States is highly criticized. I posed this question: should the government get involved, or is that too close to socialism?

While I agree that something must be done to ensure Americans have access to health care, I'm not sure that goverment provided health care is the answer. First, there is really no such thing as "government provided" health care. Like any other government program, it will be "tax payer" provided health care because the taxpayers will pay for it. Today there are a large number of citizens who are uninsured because they reportedly cannot afford to pay health care premiums. If government takes over health care, then many of the same people who cannot afford to pay for health care today will pay for government provided health care via taxes. That said, I agree that government should play some role in health care even if it is to provide for those who cannot provide for themselves.

I'm on Medicare, a government run unit, so why not extend a helping hand to all United States citizens. When it comes to caring for a sick child or a complete family, I don't care what the Medical service is called, or what philosophical doctrine it's related to, as long as it gets the job done.
