Should Your College Major Be Based on Interest?

By: Amanda Coggin (Little_personView Profile)

I chose journalism instead of creative writing because I preferred nine-grain to Wonderbread. Now my career pays me enough to eat warm bread from a restaurant’s breadbasket and is directly aligned to the tuition my father kindly paid. The New York Times reports college graduates are choosing majors based on their interests, like philosophy, and believe this major will lead them to jobs. Do you think college graduates should choose their major based on interest or the job market?

Interest. A school can offer a dozen different majors, but that doesn't mean that there's only a dozen types of careers in the world. Unless you're specializing in something like nursing or web development, follow your academic strengths and become a knowledgeable, trainable individual. But degrees, of course, don't make you an instant success. Find people in the industry you want to enter and get as much information from them as possible; try to find entry-level work; and network, network, network. Once you get your foot in the door, no company will care about what was written on your degree, anyway.
Interest. College is not solely about getting a job afterward. It's supposed to make you a critical thinker and prepare you for the world--not necessarily the marketplace. If you can find a balance, even better. The skills really need to be learned with job experience and advanced degrees. Internships seem vital too.

Interest. For some school is a struggle and painstaking all 4 years! For me, there would be no way I could muster up the energy and motivation to finish if I did not think it would lead me to my interest goals. There needs to be more than just ONE class that you walk out of saying "WOW!" Feeling like your money is worth and will expand your knowledge will lead you to a career most fitting for you. You can always go back to school to increase your pay or move up the ladder, in fact, a BS is coming the new GED, so starting off with what your into will better prepare you for YOUR life.

Interest. Had I followed my interests my career path would be different now. I believe there should be a class that students take to direct them their first year of college based on their interests. talents, skills. and then see how it can manifest in the current market based on demand. If you love doing something you will be more creative .

That's a toss-up! Intellectualism versus Corporation Endeavour ... taking the first path, a path less taken, can land you in the poor house, but what a helluva journey. To tell you the truth, I'm the last person you should heed on this matter.

I believe in a balance. Students should definitely study what interests them, but they should also study subjects that expand their understanding and vision of the world. One of the things that sticks in my mind from the university president's address to my freshman class was, "You should follow a course of study that teaches you how to think."

Interest! I think that companies hiring fresh college graduates want to see smart people who are hard workers (but maybe I'm biased because I was an English major...) and don't care as much about the major.
