Almost Thirty

By: Salma Rumman (View Profile)

As I near 30 instead of looking at what lies before me, I would rather laugh at what is behind me.  I guess the downside is that I’m older and the upside is that I’m wiser.  Although spending time with any child will quickly remind me that they know just as much as I do about life and everything I do know could be proven wrong in seconds.  So with that disclaimer, this is what I do know:

  • I pee more than I use to
  • A broken heart makes you scared to try again
  • Men with shaved heads are incredibly sexy
  • I’m not upset if I accidentally wake up early on the weekend
  • I no longer have to look like a tramp on Halloween
  • I have a lot less time for ‘soul-searching’ men
  • I no longer laugh at the thought of long-term planning
  • When somebody says, “I don’t want to hurt you,” they are about to
  • My definition of sexy has changed to include responsible, motivated, and kind
  • I have a clearer idea of which foods I need to avoid
  • If I don’t get enough sleep, I get a cold
  • A quiet evening at home is a wonderful way to spend a Friday night
  • I wear wraps a lot more than I use to
  • I’m finding teenage fashion more and more scandalous
  • I have a much better idea of what I think I want

Yet some things haven’t changed much:

  • My mother still tells me what looks good on me and what does not
  • I still laugh more when I’ve had some alcohol
  • I still have a slight attitude problem
  • My thighs still have the same form as they did in my childhood pictures
  • Practical jokes on my brother still give me a good belly laugh
  • My grandmother still wonders when I’ll bring home a husband
  • I still sit at the “kids” table during large family dinners
  • I do not like people telling me what to do
  • I can dish it out but I have a harder time taking it

Salma, welcome to your thirties and it's gets better as you get older. So long as you accept yourself for who you are. Congratulations! I remember when I was 29 and 3/4 and sayin, 'Oh my God, I'm going to be 30! But you know what? It was a lot better than what I was expecting which for me it meant, no more excuses. The older you get, the clearer life gets and you awareness kicks in and you act, think, talk, and approach life with a different eye.

Salma, you are wiser. Profound and funny. I remember having some of the same thoughts as I approached 30. Now I'm on to thinking about 40 and hoping more of the same kind of wisdom (and some new wisdom) applies.

Some of these nearly made me cry! One of my favorites was the less time for "soul-searching men." I'm not sure when I decided to avoid these types, but I'm with you!
