Almost Thirty

By: Salma Rumman (View Profile)

  • I still accidentally laugh uncontrollably at very inappropriate times
  • I still call my dad on anything related to taxes, money, cars, and contracts
  • I still call my dad when I need the unconditional love from an amazing man
  • I still have all my High School memorabilia in my closet at my parent’s house
  • And, I still want my mommy when I’m sick
I guess 30 is just another number, although it’s a big fat round one.  Perhaps I should have more figured out by now, more plans, a baby, property, or even a car less that 10 years old.  But for now, I have no complaints.  I’m not sure at what age the clear epiphanies start rolling in or if they ever do.  Each year has brought new challenges and lessons that do not necessarily apply to the next set of challenges and lessons.  You figure one thing out then something you didn’t even expect shows up.  I think that is the way life works at 15, 30, or 90.  You have to take it all as it comes and as my wise grandfather use to say, “knowledge is knowing that there is always more to learn.”   So I will embrace 30 with arms open wide, thankfully I still have many months to go.

Salma, welcome to your thirties and it's gets better as you get older. So long as you accept yourself for who you are. Congratulations! I remember when I was 29 and 3/4 and sayin, 'Oh my God, I'm going to be 30! But you know what? It was a lot better than what I was expecting which for me it meant, no more excuses. The older you get, the clearer life gets and you awareness kicks in and you act, think, talk, and approach life with a different eye.

Salma, you are wiser. Profound and funny. I remember having some of the same thoughts as I approached 30. Now I'm on to thinking about 40 and hoping more of the same kind of wisdom (and some new wisdom) applies.

Some of these nearly made me cry! One of my favorites was the less time for "soul-searching men." I'm not sure when I decided to avoid these types, but I'm with you!
