Nourishing Thoughts: Ready to Start Anew?

I always love the New Year because it’s a time when we naturally feel that we will begin something new.

The Dalai Lama says, “We can always begin again.” The first time I read this I thought duh…of course, another one of those, “today is the first day of the rest of your life” sayings. But then I read it again and understood the deep forgiveness there is in those words and their meaning was brought to life. We have to forgive ourselves for all the decisions we have ever made and let the new intentions come to life out of the deepest, purest hope for ourselves and others. We cannot make new intentions for 2007 if we still have a list of bad decisions from years gone by. We are beginning A New Year. We are beginning anew.

That’s why I love the start of a new year. It holds the perfect time for forgiveness and we can put all our new intentions into one big basket of hope and jump into the river, which will carry us through life for the next year.

A medieval poem talks about the New Year this way:

Take out, then take in

Bad luck will begin

Take in, then take out

Good luck comes about

Basically it means to bring something new into your home, your heart, and your life before ridding of something. It tells us of how we shall create our intentions for the New Year. Not by talking about all the bad habits we want to rid ourselves of, but rather all the good ones that we want to include into our lives.

So, go ahead. Bring in something new and the old will no longer have room in your life.

The intentions that we bring with us into the New Year can be very powerful as they help us set the tone for the year to come. Research has shown that the brain does not distinguish between doing something and just thinking about it. This is the reason that intentions are so powerful.
