Nourishing Thoughts: My Self

By: Jeanette Bronee, Path for Life (View Profile)

When we talk about learning how to take better care of ourselves as women, I would like to start changing the self to Self. Yes, we need to capitalize the S. Just doing that already made you straighten your back a little, right?

As women, we are blessed with a gift that most of us have yet to embrace, understand, and master. That gift is our ability to be both strong and gentle.

The challenge for most, however, seems to be not just knowing this Self, but expressing it. I’m not saying we don’t know who we are in a manifesting sort of way. Instead, I’m encouraging us to accept our inner needs and desires as part of us and who we become in the world.

A major part of the essence of being a woman is having needs, having them met, allowing ourselves to receive, and being able to care and provide for ourselves at the same time. We can be a warrior and a lover, all in one.

What does that look like in daily life? That’s where getting to know our Selves comes into play: learning to listen to that voice inside that we as women are so blessed with. Our inner wisdom will tell us when something is not right, but far too often, we do not listen.

The first step is to ask; if I was my own child what would I do for my care and safe keeping? How would I schedule my day to include time for food and rest? What would I do to ensure having some time for fun and play? We tend to ignore and put on hold basic nourishment of our Selves in daily life.

The next step is to listen. If I were asking a wise woman right now, what truth would she tell me about the matter at hand? Often we ignore the wise voice inside us that tells us our truth. Instead, we keep it inside, reject it, or even convince our Selves that it is wrong.
