Something Wonderful

I wanted to make my first writing here something good and happy that hopefully someone could relate to so here it is. Something wonderful happened today. It was just some scrap yarn in my stash that I picked it out because of the color and softness. I was just feeling creative and I got out my crochet hook and started. I thought about days gone by and my grandmother teaching me to crochet what seems like ages ago now. She was not always patience but never gave up on me either. The light filtered through hand made curtains on farm windows and the warm summery smell in the house. Funny how a little metal hook can bring up such memories.

I sewed out the pattern for a cap bit by bit. Pulling it apart, starting over. Crossing out and writing down. In the end it was just a simple cap in the team colors of a friend’s beloved home team. A simple Christmas gift two years back, not special or fancy but something by me, of me, from me. I’d never seen it worn until a few times this winter and though I said nothing I couldn’t help smiling. It felt nice knowing my little cap was keeping warm a friend. It was doing its job in their eyes and appreciated in mine. It was just a simple thing that wasn’t spoken of.

Then something wonderful happened this past Saturday. I had just finished cleaning up for the night and sat down to relax a bit before bed when the call came. My friend called me to ask if I remember the cap I made and me saying yes with that delighted grin on my lips. It seems a coworker had admired it so much that he asked if I might make one in his teams colors. Now obviously it was nice to have someone appreciating my work but it was more than that. I looked through my yarn stash to see if I had any of the colors needed and I realized that it was so much more to me. It was my grandmother living on in that gift of her teaching me. It was all those warm summer days that seemed so far away brought right up close and living in the stitches. She and I are together even if only I know it. It was magical. Thank you God.
