I’m out of college. I can afford the occasional fifteen dollar cocktail at happy hour and the inflated wine prices at the company dinner. But when I’m in charge sometimes it’s nice to give my wallet a breather and I opt for lower budget imbibing. I’m not talking watered down beer and cheap head-cracking, inducing vodka—rather a fantastically cheap, yet oh-so-trendy version of sangria.
Sangria by nature is not a fancy drink. Over-ripe fruit mixed with mediocre red wine, some sort of distilled spirit for kick, and a day to stew in its own simplicity. What Spaniards call a tinto de verano is what I call “poor man’s sangria.” The ingredients can vary a bit—but either way it’s a winner.
Red wine + orange soda + squeeze of lemon = tinto de verano.
Some people use a lemon-lime soda, I’ve been known to use diet orange soda, either way it’s great. And quite easy to pour in a pitcher with the sliced lemon—never fails to impress a crowd.
