The Quick Fix Is Faux!

Let’s get something straight: I may be an interior designer, but I do not have HGTV’s entire programming schedule memorized. And, while we’re at it, I don’t aspire to have my own show on said network either.

I would be a rich woman if I had the proverbial dollar for every time someone asked me the question to that answer. While, I will admit, there is a certain entertainment value to the frenzy, the unveiling—the cute carpenter toiling away in the backyard—the “oh my god!” response seen on TV programs has created a negative precedent, in my opinion. Reality shows have generated in many clients an unreal expectation for the “oh my god!” experience, delivered without fail each time, usually from a designer who is working under an extreme deadline or budget.

Do you really want the reality show experience? To have your house designed by total strangers, without your input? I ask you: who actually wants a piece of plywood covered with batting and fabric attached to their wall as a headboard? Or how about cute little stenciled riser covers on your stairs to add a homey touch? Not me.

A home is so much more than a quick fix. True, there is something to be said for a face-lift—a new coat of paint can freshen up a space. But a home is a reflection of you, your lifestyle, and the people that you love. It deserves time and consideration, and the solutions should not come from a big box store. Your home is a place that makes you feel safe and protects you from the world. In short, it is the backdrop for your life. If you feel comfortable in your environment, if your space is a true reflection of you, then you have a better chance of being your true self in that space.

For this reason, I always find it hard to give design advice to people that I don’t know. In my opinion, the “rules” of design are malleable and should be bent to fit your style. Objects that mean something to you, not tchotchkes from a chain store, should occupy your personal space.

Okay. I understand that coming from a design professional, this sounds easier said than done. I understand that each person’s brain perceives or visualizes differently. And I understand that not everyone can visualize how elements in a room could work together. Visualizing and understanding space, and knowing how to create a feeling in that space, are skills that take time to learn.

But everyone has gut feelings. You know, that zing! you get in your gut, when something feels right? Follow that instinct. And when you see an object or a color that resonates with you, then snatch it up and make it your own. I challenge you to go out into the world and take the time to learn what that zing! is telling you about you. Create a space from your gut, and don’t settle for any quick fixes like the ones you see on television. Like a faux finish, the quick fix will feel artificial. Although I wouldn’t mind settling for the cute, sweaty carpenter.
