Reasons to Buy Local Food

By: Lena Vazifdar (View Profile)

Buying locally increases the variety of produce available. Large supermarkets can only sell produce that is commonly available and easy to transport. They purchase produce that can survive long periods of transport and extensive packaging, and that have a long shelf life. Local farmers don’t have to worry about these requirements and are free to grow smaller crops, including many different varieties of fruits and vegetables that cannot usually be found at a supermarket.

Local food is not genetically modified. Only the large factory farms that cater to supermarkets grow genetically modified produce using genetically modified seeds. Small local farms grow their produce naturally without using genetically modified seeds.
