A Very Sweet Seduction

Chocolate has never had any real power over me. You would never find my face smeared with truffles after a messy breakup. I never got giddy with excitement when a waiter taunted me with warm molten chocolate cake.

I’ve given chocolate plenty of opportunities to seduce me. I have tried dozens of brands, including spicy, spiced, and speckled super-premium confections. I’ve run the gamut—Rich Art, Vosges, mass-produced Godiva, and even See’s. But after all this, I have until recently found chocolate delicious, but not passionately addictive.

I know that others lack self-control—namely, my best friend. She keeps a Toblerone bar or two in her purse at all times. In the fourteen years I have known her, she has never let the sun set without some form of chocolate passing her lips. No joke. I felt sorry for her, so weak in the face of such a manageable craving.

My husband and I received a gift in a plain brown box of what appeared to be small production treats from the Chicago-based Bon Bon chocolate company. “How nice,” I thought as I popped them on a shelf, to be eaten, you know, whenever. Later that night, bored with the movie we were watching, I toddled off to the kitchen for a snack. With the box, I plopped down on the couch for the rest of the film. The first bite made me squirm in my seat. “What is that?” I thought as dark chocolate mingled with an exotic sweet curry. I eyed the selection of hearts, pyramids, Buddhas, and jewels with intense interest. Next, a dark acorn melted in my mouth, blending a perfect balance between creamy dark chocolate, sublime white ganache, and ginger. The green jewel beckoned. I surrendered completely to its decadent mingling of rich dark chocolate and fresh mint. I slowly worked my way through almost half the box indulging in infusions of lady grey tea, Chinese five spice, ancho chili, lemon, lavender, honey, and so many, many more.

I did not tell my husband about the chocolate. In that moment, I realized there is love … and then, there is chocolate. That night has haunted me like a forbidden tryst. I have tried in vain to find a chocolate that can compare to Bon Bon. These temptations are handmade by a mother and daughter team with French and Belgium couverature, the highest quality of chocolate on the planet. Rich in cocoa butter, these gems turn to creamy silk in the mouth. To further seduce, Bon Bon offers a set of chocolates depicting the sexual positions in the Kama Sutra.

Obsession has a price, and Bon Bon is not cheap. But at this point, I don’t care. Bon Bon of Chicago has brought me, quivering to my knees, to worship the dark god. Order these amazing chocolates here or at the retail outlet at 5410 North Clark Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60640.
