Since the Vargas clan runs a homey B&B named Siempreverde (doubles from $52) nearby, it’s possible to turn a “Coffee Encounter” into an overnight excursion. On the other hand, getting to sleep isn’t very likely after ingesting all that caffeine. So it’s just as easy to drive back to San José and check into Hotel Santo Tomás (doubles from $70). This turn-of-the-century building in the historic Barrio Amon district once belonged to a coffee baron and is decorated, appropriately enough, in shades of café con leche and café negro. It makes a great base for exploring the capital’s countless coffee shops.
