Adventures & Appetites: Revealing the Zest in Food & Real Folks around the World

By: Amber Stott (View Profile)

I love to cook—and eat. Whether I'm traveling outside the U.S., exploring a new hiking trail in California with my husband, celebrating a birthday or a wedding with a colleague, or enjoying time with friends, there is always one common thread: food.

My blog will capture the tastes and personalities associated with my travels—whether in Africa or around the block from my home in Sacramento, California. From the brightest ripe mango shakes of the Philippines to the tangy ceviches of Ecuador to the gooey stuffed pizzas of Illinois, you will not only experience the flavors of these regions. I will also engage you in the lives of the people in those regions—after all, most food is served alongside a healthy recipe of story and community, smiles and sharing.

And sadly, for some, stories of hunger. While I love being around food and thinking about my next yummy meal, I work for Freedom from Hunger, an international development nonprofit using integrated microfinance to end hunger around the world. I recognize that the theme of “food” is one fraught with privilege. There are those of us who are fortunate to have been born in America, and who have plenty to eat and share. But for many, about a billion people around the world living on a dollar a day or less, food is a scarce commodity.

Travel with me. Laugh, cry and drool. Many tastes, many stories await you.

Cheers! Akubekuhle! Skål! Salud!

Rumble, grumble! Amber you're making me hungry just imagining the places we will travel and vicariously eat in together! Eating is such an intrinsic part of the traveling experience but so is recognizing the realities and issues and struggles of others. I'm so happy and grateful that you will also share your experiences and insights of working with this fantastic nonprofit. Thank you.
