Child Sex Offender Lists

Should child sex offender addresses be online? I read two articles recently. One outlined forty-five sex offenders living in one Long Island neighborhood. Another reported on a California man, who was a criminal, but was listed wrongly online as a child sex offender. He was killed recently and the man arrested is the father of a small child who complained of the man’s child sex offender status. This begs the question: do lists of child sex offenders’ addresses benefit parents?

Research has proven that people who sexually offend children have a high incidence of repeating the behavior. They are only labeled as pedophiles after they have done this several times and are "caught". As a parent I think you have a right to keep your children as safe as possible. I would want to know that if my neighbor could be potentially harmful so that I could take steps to keep my child safe. I do agree that the online listings should have a thorough screening process to prevent errors such as listing the wrong person however. I say its better to be safe than sorry.

Well, hell! Why are convicted sex offenders roaming the streets, anyway. Wouldn't need such lists if they were still behind bars. I may be outta line, but a pretty good deterrent to these damn chicken hawks would be cutting off their family jewels, or just plain whack'em...and I don't mean the just the jewels. I apologize for my blunt opinion...the Texan in me came out.
I think sometimes these lists can benefit parents, but it's better to get it straight from the town hall or official records, rather than the Web; there's just too much chance of error. Also, once you know, it just means you have to stay alert. I'm not completely convinced I would want to know who's living in my neighborhood. Then again things may change once I have a child.

These lists are so very misleading. some of the people on there committed horrible crimes against children and then have their official charges don't look all that bad. Then, others have committed some stupid act, and their charges make them look like a monster. I have personally seen too many people who have been persecuted, beaten and harmed by being on this list when they didn't deserve it.

I think it all sounds a bit like a witch hunt, and we all know how those end up.

How can one be rehabilitated if they are forever marked on a black list?
