Winter Got Your Skin Down? How to Get Your Glow Back

By Beauty Bets | 2/20/2012

It’s that time of year again when my winter skincare regimen is simply no longer cutting it. Whatever radiance I once had has been lost to the icy tundra or sucked dry by indoor heat. If you can relate, follow this simple three-step approach to getting your glow back:

Step One: Step Up the Exfoliation. Like, big time. Your youthful-looking complexion of yore is currently shrouded in dull, dead skin cells. Buff them away with a physical (i.e. gritty) scrub + fruit enzyme peel, the next-best thing to a professional peel.  Try: Kate Somerville Exfolikate ($85) or Exfolikate Gentle ($65) for more sensitive types.

Step Two: Layer on Illumination. Sometimes the only solution is to fake it. Adding a layer of liquid illuminator (not powder, which looks cake-y on dry skin) under your foundation or mixed right in with it is an easy, fool-proof way to give your skin a lit-from-within glow that doesn’t scream “shimmer.” Try: MAC Strobe Cream ($15)

Step 3: Just Add Balm. They’re a beautiful thing, balms, but often misunderstood. You can use one instead of a moisturizer if you skin is ultra-dry, but my favorite trick is to press balm on top of makeup, giving cheeks a natural-looking sheen that looks like you’ve been living on salmon. Try: One Love Organics Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm ($68)
