This week’s tutorial is a bit selfish but it’s one of my favorite easy nail art ideas! Wednesday happens to be my birthday so I decided to celebrate by showing you all how to make cute little cupcakes on your nails! It’s perfect for birthday parties, bridal showers, any cause for celebration!
This manicure requires a few different colors of polishes. First you need your base color, which for me was Butter London Snog. Then you need your base of the cupcake which I chose Essie Chinchilly. The black striper is for the lines in the cupcake base and the pink striper will be for a cherry on top! The white (or vanilla frosting) is Essie Blanc and the sprinkles colors will be NARS Amchoor and China Glaze Aquadelic. Lastly you will need something to make the sprinkles, in my case a dotting tool but a toothpick will work, and a q-tip if you aren’t sure you can make the icing without it!
First, apply the color you want to be your base color that will show around and above the cupcake. Since my cupcake was fairly neutral, I did a bright background but depending on what colors you use, you may want to go more neutral. Wait a few minutes for Step one to mostly dry before continuing.
Now it’s time to start the base of the cupcake. For this, I used the normal brush on Essie Chinchilly and was just a bit more careful. I find it’s best to paint about 1/3 of the way up the nail and leave a little room on the sides so that you can see it’s a picture of something in front of the base color.
You know how cupcake wrappers are kind of pleated? That’s what this step is for! For this step, you need your striper or a skinny paint brush, or if you’re really careful you can use a toothpick dipped in black nail polish very carefully. Make a few thin, vertical lines to show the pleats in the wrapper!
Now it’s time to make the frosting! On the left, I just used the Essie brush that came with Blanc to gently make dots to form the frosting. On the right, I put Blanc on a piece of wax paper (a larger blog) and dipped a q-tip in it and then dabbed onto the nail to make the circular effect. You need to move slowly with this step to make sure you don’t just end up with a glob of white! Now wait a few minutes for the frosting part to dry before moving on.
Now it’s time for the sprinkles! Be creative with this part! I chose to do two colors for this but you can do as many or as few as you like! I like to use the smallest dotting tool to do these but a toothpick would work perfectly as well!
Now it’s time to put a cherry on the top and you’re finished! I used a hot pink striper to do mine but you can use any pink or red polish and whatever you use for your dots! Now just add your favorite top coat and enjoy your cupcake nails!
