Hair How-To: Rebecca Minkoff's Beautiful Braids at NYFW

One of my favorite looks from New York Fashion Week this September was at the Rebecca Minkoff SS14 show. I think her shows always have a very "wearable" appeal. I mean, I know I like the idea of being super edgy and wild with my fashion/hair/makeup, but when it comes down to it, I really like being a girl who dresses pretty and has pretty hair. It's hard to imagine myself walking down the street with hair like the models wore at the 3.1 Phillip Lim show…cool as it did look.

So, Rebecca, thank you for these soft, milkmaid-inspired coiffes. It's a look that can be worn to the gym, out for casual drinks with the girls or in beautiful clothes fresh off the runway like Lindsey Wixson. Best part? Its easy to achieve! Here's how you can get the look:

  1. Start out with dry hair. This is a great look for everyone: curly, wavy, straighty…or thick, coarse, fine, thin hair. Doesn't matter.
  2. Choose where you want your hair parted. If it's a heavy part to the side, make sure it moves more to the center the further back it goes, so that by the time it reaches the back of your head, it's perfectly centered and you have two sections of hair similar in size.
  3. Braid each section like Pippi Longstocking and secure with an elastic.
  4. Cross the braids over the top of your head and secure with a bobby pin, tucking in the tails so that they don't show.

I also did a video tutorial for this look a little while ago. Check it out!

This hairstyle is great for fall. I love it with a button-up shirt or a chunky sweater. Enjoy!
