This spring, I'm campaigning for lip staining. Lip stains are not only practical for their long wear but beautifully natural looking. I love I-just-ate-a-popsicle lips when temps begin to climb and you're out at a barbecue, a festival, a baseball game, or at the pool. Your spring and summer beauty look should transition to something more effortless and a lip stain is perfect for just that.
Before I dive into my favorite lip stain products, here are a few tips on using them:
- If you want to apply a lip balm with your stain, do so on top. If the lip balm is applied first, the waxy texture can create a barrier and prevent the stain from soaking in.
- Apply a lip scrub like BITE Beauty Whipped Cherry Lip Scrub prior to applying your stain. Because stains are a dryer consistency, they will cling to and accentuate flaky, dry lips.
Now for the fun stuff! These are some great lip stain options that are non-sticky, long-wearing, and fit into any budget.
1. Stila Lip and Cheek Stain
These have a lip gloss appearance when first applied and once the gloss wears off, they leave behind a lovely stain. These are the most shimmery option and they smell delicious!
2. Revlon ColorBurst Balm Stain
Moisturizing, minty and available in a ton of shades, the consistency of this lip stain is like that of your favorite lip balm but leaves behind a flattering color.
3. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Stained Gloss
The original Lip Tars are as pigmented as pigmented gets! I love that OCC made a more sheer version in the Stained Gloss. The colors are all vivid jewel tones; they remind me of a stained glass window.
4. Boots No7 Stay Perfect Lip Stain
Stain and balm in one—so handy! I like the felt tip marker applicator on this stain for its precision application. The effect is natural and lovely. I especially like the color Ballet for its wearability across all skin tones.
5. L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Caresse Aqua Lip Lacquer
I am totally in love with these lip stains. The texture is like nothing else I've used. They feel almost like water at first and then they dry but never truly mattify. Some lip stains can be drying, but these are actually über hydrating.
6. Benefit Benetint
I have a special connection with this product because it was the first "real" makeup product I ever got. My mom and I were in Chicago when a fabulous woman at the Benefit counter put this on my lips and cheeks. I felt so instantly chic. This is a natural berry stain and you'll know it's made from steeped rose petals from the scent! You can definitely build this up on your lips to be a deeper tint.
7. Benefit Cha Cha Tint
The Benetint cousin from Miami, this tropical-hued stain is perfectly on trend for a spring where we're seeing orange pouts.
8. Benefit Posietint
The pink counterpart to Benetint and perfect for those who want a more natural look. This isn't as pigmented as Benetint but just as buildable.
